Nepal Imports Over 6000 EVs Valued at Rs 15 Billion in Seven Months

Nepal imported more than 6100 units of electric cars, jeeps and vans worth Rs 15 billion from mid-July 2023 to mid-February 2024 of the current fiscal year. According to the data published by the Department of Customs (DoC), 6,159 units of EVs (Electric Vehicles) were imported in the seven months of the current fiscal year.

During these months, the nation brought in 2,677 electric vehicles with a capacity of up to 50 kW and 3,394 EVs with a capacity ranging from 51 kW to 100 kW. Similarly, Nepal imported 70 four-wheeler EVs with a capacity of 101 kW to 200 kW, and 18 EVs with a capacity ranging from 201 kW to 300 kW.

The government spent Rs 15 billion on the import of electric vehicles, while it collected Rs 6 billion in revenue. The current fiscal year has witnessed electric vehicle imports surpassing three times the figures from the same period in the previous fiscal year.

Notably, a significant portion of these electric vehicles were imported from China. As per the Department of Customs, China leads with 3,711 imported EV units in seven months, followed by India with 2,380 units. Additionally, 39 EV units were imported from South Korea, 20 from Indonesia, 5 from Germany, and 3 from the United States.
